The methodology of materials accounting is presented and applied to developing nutrient balance (nitrogen and phosphorus)
in a river basin. The method is based on the balance principle: inputs and outputs of each nitrogen and phosphorus related
sub-systems were balanced. The application of the methodology strategies was illustrated by means of a case study of the Krka
river, Slovenia. Different pathways of emission to surface waters were taken into account: WWTP discharges, direct discharges,
erosion/runoff and baseflow. Total annual emission into the river Krka was estimated to be 362 tonnes N/year and 73.3 tonnes
P/year. The main sources of nitrogen are diffuse sources, emitted via baseflow (52%). Other important sources are effluents
from WWTP, which account for 36% of total emissions. Other sources like erosion and direct discharges to surface water (animal
manure, industry, households) are of lower magnitude. Erosion is main source of phosphorus emission (55% of total emission),
WWTP effluents account for 37% of total emission, while other sources are less important. Besides reduction of point sources
by means of wastewater collection and implementation of nutrient removal technology, managing agricultural nitrogen and phosphorus
to protect water quality should become a major challenge in the Krka river basin. 相似文献

This study uses knowledge discovery concepts to analyze large amounts of data step by step for the purpose of assisting in the formulation of environmental policy. We performed data cleansing and extracting from existing nation-wide databases, and used regression and classification techniques to analyze the data. The current water hardness in Kaohsiung, Taiwan contributes to the prevention of cardiovascular disease (CVD) but exacerbates the development of renal stones (RS). However, to focus on water hardness alone to control RS would not be cost effective at all, because the existing database parameters do not adequately allow for a clear understanding of RS. Controls on Nutrients Across a Prairie Stream Watershed: Land Use and Riparian Cover Effects 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Nutrient inputs generally are increased by human-induced land use changes and can lead to eutrophication and impairment of
surface waters. Understanding the scale at which land use influences nutrient loading is necessary for the development of
management practices and policies that improve water quality. The authors assessed the relationships between land use and
stream nutrients in a prairie watershed dominated by intermittent stream flow in the first-order higher elevation reaches.
Total nitrogen, nitrate, and phosphorus concentrations were greater in tributaries occupying the lower portions of the watershed,
closely mirroring the increased density of row crop agriculture from headwaters to lower-elevation alluvial areas. Land cover
classified at three spatial scales in each sub-basin above sampling sites (riparian in the entire catchment, catchment land
cover, and riparian across the 2 km upstream) was highly correlated with variation in both total nitrogen (r2 = 53%, 52%, and 49%, respectively) and nitrate (r2 = 69%, 65%, and 56%, respectively) concentrations among sites. However, phosphorus concentrations were not significantly
associated with riparian or catchment land cover classes at any spatial scale. Separating land use from riparian cover in
the entire watershed was difficult, but riparian cover was most closely correlated with in-stream nutrient concentrations.
By controlling for land cover, a significant correlation of riparian cover for the 2 km above the sampling site with in-stream
nutrient concentrations could be established. Surprisingly, land use in the entire watershed, including small intermittent
streams, had a large influence on average downstream water quality although the headwater streams were not flowing for a substantial

Severe drinking water shortage affects all resident of the Kabul river basin. Two and a half decades of civil war in Afghanistan
(it began in late 1978) have resulted in widespread environmental degradation and water resource development throughout the
country. The war has already finished and, therefore, water resource management for supplying water is one of the most important
tasks for Afghanistan’s government. The Kabul river basin which is the most populated area in the country is located in the
eastern part of Afghanistan. This article deals with the water resource properties of the Kabul river basin and also water
demand in the important cities of the basin, such as Kabul, the capital and the largest city in the country. Also a few suggestions

This paper aims to give practical meaning to ‘capacity building’ through (a) identifying a suite of practical measures, such
as mentoring or best practice guidelines, that have been shown to or are considered to build human, social, institutional,
and economic capital; (b) placing these measures within a broader systems framework; and (c) exploring stakeholder feedback
on specific measures to inform framework implementation. The 29 measures described provide actors, whether government or nongovernment,
with a suite of practical investment choices for building capacity. These measures are then clustered into eight groups according
to their primary purpose and placed within a systems framework. The framework provides a tool for actors with responsibilities
for or an interest in capacity building to inform more holistic and strategic targeting of effort and investment. Stakeholder
feedback gathered through surveys and workshops is subsequently reported to further inform implementation of specific measures
within the framework’s eight groupings. The framework presented may be built upon through the identification and inclusion
of further capacity building measures. The research is conducted within the context of decentralized governance arrangements
for natural resource management (NRM), with specific focus on Australia’s recently formalized 56 NRM regions and their community-based
governing boards as an informative arena of learning. Application of the framework is explored in the Australian setting through
the identification and comparison of measures supported and most preferred by four major stakeholder groups, namely board
members, regional NRM organization staff, policy/research interests, and Indigenous interests. The research also examines
stakeholder perceptions of capacity issues, and whether these issues are likely to be addressed through implementing their
preferred measures.

Sampling was conducted at three site groups, group E (in East Taihu Bay), G (in Gonghu Bay) and M (in Meiliang Bay) in Lake
Taihu. TN and TP concentrations among site groups was in the increasing order of E < G < M. TP level at G sites is at the
critical threshold for loss of submersed macrophytes. Mean values of DO and Transparence showed different trend, i.e., E >
G > M. The mean phytoplankton fresh-weight biomass at M sites was 5.81 mg/l, higher than that at E sites (4.96 mg/l) and G
sites (5.18 mg/l). Mean zooplankton fresh-weight biomass was in the decreasing order of M (6.4 mg/l) > G (4.9 mg/l) > E (2.7 mg/l).
However, Rotifera density was in the sequence of E > G > M. Both zooplankton biomass and phytoplankton biomass increased with the rise of TN
and TP concentrations. Relationships between zooplankton biomass and phytoplankton biomass showed that zooplankton played
a limited role in the control of algae in eutrophic lakes. Nutrient availability is much more important than zooplankton grazing
pressure in controlling phytoplankton growth in lakes. For most sites in Lake Taihu, reduction of nutrient loading, as well
as macrophyte conservation, zappears to be especially important in maintaining high water quality and regulating lake biological
structure, but for M sites, it’s urgent to control nutrient inputs rather than to restore macrophyte community. 相似文献

Source characterization of ambient fine particles at multiple sites in the Seattle area 总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
To identify major PM2.5 (particulate matter ≤2.5 μm in aerodynamic diameter) sources with a particular emphasis on the ship engine emissions from a major port, integrated 24 h PM2.5 speciation data collected between 2000 and 2005 at five United State Environmental Protection Agency's Speciation Trends Network monitoring sites in Seattle, WA were analyzed. Seven to ten PM2.5 sources were identified through the application of positive matrix factorization (PMF). Secondary particles (12–26% for secondary nitrate; 17–20% for secondary sulfate) and gasoline vehicle emissions (13–31%) made the largest contributions to the PM2.5 mass concentrations at all of the monitoring sites except for the residential Lake Forest site, where wood smoke contributed the most PM2.5 mass (31%). Other identified sources include diesel vehicle emissions, airborne soil, residual oil combustion, sea salt, aged sea salt, metal processing, and cement kiln. Residual oil combustion sources identified at multiple monitoring sites point clearly to the Port of Seattle suggesting ship emissions as the source of oil combustion particles. In addition, the relationship between sulfate concentrations and the oil combustion emissions indicated contributions of ship emissions to the local sulfate concentrations. The analysis of spatial variability of PM2.5 sources shows that the spatial distributions of several PM2.5 sources were heterogeneous within a given air shed. 相似文献
